PSP Custom Firmware Installation
Your Sony PSP operates on an operating system called Firmware. When Custom Firmware is installed, it gives you the freedom to use homebrew programs that are not normally available such as Emulators. It also allows you to run PSP and PSone games from your Memory Stick rather than UMDs for faster loading and more convenience.
